Current production: Paz y Paz - Inside the prosecutor's office With 6500 murders on a population of 14 million, Guatemala is in the top-5 of countries with the highest annual murder rate of the world. Only 2% of the murder cases in Guatemala get solved. In the remaining 98%, an investigation is never started or the investigation does not lead to any conviction. Fifteen years after the signing of the Peace Accords, the parallel security structures that were created by the army during the civil war still yield considerable control in Guatemala. The documentary follows Guatemala's chief prosecutor Claudia Paz y Paz and her colleagues from the Public Prosecutor's Office in their fight against impunity. The story unfolds during the crucial months in which Guatemala holds general elections and in which some high profile trials are scheduled. The film shows the fight for the rule of law in a country that is under the control of hidden powers. The documentary gives valuable insight into the harsh reality with which the international community is confronted in fragile states. The documentary is filmed between September and November 2011 and will have a duration of around 60 minutes. The film is made for a broad international audience and will be shown on various international film festivals. |
